FAIRMOUNT PARK & WISSAHICKON VALLEY

The Roxborough neighborhood is straddled by two waterways, the Schuylkill River and the Wissahickon Creek.  These waterways offer many recreational activities for local residents and visitors where one can remove themselves from City life.  Both waterways located in less than a mile distance from the Roxborough Central Corridor.

Schuylkill River Trail
The Manayunk Towpath runs parallel to the Schuylkill River along the eastside.  Access points to the Manayunk Towpath are located at different locations along Main Street in Manayunk.  The towpath is 22 miles in length and the gravel path is excellent for jogging, biking or hiking.  The trail provides overhead lanterns to light the trail at night.

Wissahickon Trails
Philadelphia’s beautiful Fairmount Park system is one of the largest public parks in the country.  The crown jewel of Fairmount Park is the Wissahickon Valley Section located adjacent to Roxborough.  The main road in the Wissahickon Trail, Forbidden Drive, forbidding cars on the road, is over 6 miles in length and is wide enough for multiple uses.  Wissahickon Valley also contains more than 50 miles of trails which are used by hikers, joggers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

The Wissahickon Valley is one of the few locations in Philadelphia where the beauty of each season is captured.  Local artists can be seen painting a portrait of Valley Green with the creek in the background.

In addition, the Wissahickon Creek which run parallel to Forbidden Drive is a great place for fishing.  The Wissahickon Valley is an active location for bird watching and photography.

Entrance of Forbidden Drive begins near the Wissahickon Transfer Station at Main and Ridge Avenue and you can also enter at Wises Mill Road.  Access points to the Wissahickon Trails from the Roxborough side include off of Green Lane near Monastery Street.

Valley Green Restaurant is one of the best locations for Sunday brunch or an evening dinner is located in the middle of Forbidden Drive.  Please check out their website:
